Game of Thrones Split City Daily Tour

Start the tour at Diocletian’s Palace in the very heart of Split, built in the glory of Ancient Rome and feel the blood of the dragon pulse through your veins. The Roman palace was constructed by Emperor Diocletian, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has been a high point for world travelers for well over a thousand years, sparking the imagination of its natives, conquerors and guests – much like the cast of Game of Thrones and their crew. Daenerys fought the slave-owner overlords the Meereen and Yunkai with her faithful Unsullied within these very walls, only to return to Westeros as the victorious queen.

Sons of Harpy walking through the catacombs was filmed in the basements of Diocletian’s Palac, while the Unsullied patrol the streets of Meereen unaware of what is about to happen. After the murder of Barristan Selmy, Daenerys rounds up the heads of every prominent house in Meereen to put the rebellion to rest. She brings them down to the catacombs where her dragons Viserion and Rhaegal have been chained for months.

From the outside rectangular, and from the inside circular ground plan of this old imperial court, Vestibule leaves a monumental impression even to this day. And how fascinating was it in its original entirety: semicircular niches with statues; a large cupola with colourful glittery mosaic. Vestibule was used to enter the residential part of the palace. But can you imagine that little over half a century ago it was used for living, and that the residents kept poultry there and cultivated gardens?

Southeast of the Vestibule is the mediaeval part of the city, with the oldest early Romanesque house from the tenth century. It leans on the very Vestibule, and in it today is one of the most beautiful and most awarded Split hotels, conveniently named Vestibule. On the other side of the square is the place where the imperial chambers once were.

During the walking tour of Diocletian's palace you will stop by to see the Cathedral of St Dujam, one of the most beautiful cultural wonders, as well as the famous Golden Gates and fascinating statue of Gregory of Nin.
